Join us this week for Perennials Week!

We in the Tri-State area are typically right into Spring planting by the middle of April. Certainly we could, and usually we do have at least a light frost the last week of April, so let's be careful what we plant out before May 1. Ask before buying if the plants you are buying have been 'hardened off'. This is a term that means a plant has been treated to some pretty chilly temperatures for long enough a time to make that plant tougher, and so less likely to be damaged by a late frost. We at Robin's Nest are quite notorious for 'running people off' before it is time to plant. Be assured that we will at least try to warn you if a 'too early' plant is chosen.

Do you have well established perennial gardens? Great! We think you will be pleased with our over 200 varieties of perennials, all of which are grown here, some of which have been wintered over here. Be assured that we know the good quality of these plants, and you are going to get a very well established plant.

Are you a beginner at perennial gardening? Great! We would be happy to help you get a good, solid start--one that will encourage you to expand your knowledge of these plant varieties and learn how best to grow them. Let us help you plan a perennial bed, border, or even a container. Bring in a simple (or complex if you prefer) drawing of your available garden space. Graph Paper works very well--you can have each square represent 6 inches, or 1 foot, or 10 feet. Be sure to note North and East, and any trees, tall fences, or buildings that are within 10 feet of your garden. Will a water hose reach your garden space? Make sure to note shade or sun for this area. Bring a list of colors you might like to see in your garden, and a list of perennial varieties you have seen or been told about, if you would like.

Specialty Gardens are a great deal of fun to plan. You have so many to choose from--Butterfly/Hummingbird Gardens, Shade Gardens, Sunny Border Gardens, Cut Flower Gardens, Fragrant Gardens, Cottage Gardens, Monochromatic Gardens (all white, or red, or purple...), Rock Gardens, the list goes on, limited only by imagination. Choose one that best suits your time and interests.

If you are looking for a specific product, please ask! It may not be too late for us to get or grow it for you.

Wander through our extensive selection of Perennial Plants. We have our plants (over 250 varieties) displayed in groups according to-- sun/shade tolerance;  and  'collections' such as daylilies, hostas, rock garden plants, hummingbird and butterfly attracting plants, etc.

Do you love to have fresh cut flowers in your home? Let us show you which perennial varieties are  good cut flowers. We can also show you how to arrange them!

Who says you can't plant perennials in a container? If you find a combination of color, flower form, and texture that tickles you to death, GO FOR IT. If half the plants are annuals and the other half perennials, so what? The worst that can happen is you have to start all over next year.

English Perennial Border Gardens are becoming very popular here in the states. One of many reasons to plant such a garden is that you can introduce new plants and change them around over an extended period of years.

Did you ever think about what your landscape looks like in the winter? When you learn to do companion and succession planting, your garden can have something of interest and  beauty even in the dead of winter!
